about

Shades of Yellow is the other single on the Like Family double A-side and sits within the same thematic frame-work as ‘Like Family’ and was written to flow straight from its ending.

It emerged from a conversation with my dad, provoked by him noticing a picture of me that I had hanging in my kitchen as a little three year old girl, naked on a yellow bike, with yellow glasses on a summer afternoon,

The track echoes subtle reflections on the effects of trauma, generational divides and the connecting back to the innocent desires of our inner child. It’s hard when we feel we need to have conversations with our parents about how they perhaps hurt us, especially when they may be in a generation often ill-equipped to talk about their feelings and who were handed shame and taboo around mental health and vulnerability. Sometimes art is often a powerful way to express and name what’s been handed down, and in turn that is part of healing it and stopping the cycle.

I love the spoken word of Alabaster Plume, Kae Tempest and Self Esteem and it was really satisfying for me to use my voice in that type of way, integrated with the more haunting elements of my vocal delivery with simple keys. It was a really healing piece to create.

lyrics

SHADES OF YELLOW

Shades of yellow and bare faced cheek
Bicycle on summer ground of hot concrete
But now there’s a vastness in between our pages
And a rage that’s contagious when we speak
And I said we could do better than what history could find
You told me a story, well now I’m speaking mine
Then you saw that picture, in the kitchen and
You said nothing was in the way back then, well

Now I’m listening
Now I’m listening
Now I’m listening

Now I’m listening
Now I’m listening
Now I’m listening

And maybe it’s the age and the gaze of memory
And maybe it’s the rain that fell upon your dreams
And maybe it’s the faceless power of the beast
And maybe I just ache to be seen
